How Commercial Heat Pumps Work

As their name implies, heat pumps move heat from one area to another. Of course, so do most other commercial heating and cooling systems, so what makes heat pumps so special? Unlike furnaces that take in fuel and burn it to create heat, heat pumps do not generate their own heat. Instead they extract it. In the winter they take heat from the air outside and transfer it to the indoor air, which is then circulated through your building.

In the summer, the process is reversed, and your heat pump can remove heat from your indoor air and send it outside to keep the indoors cool and comfortable. So rather than installing a separate heating and cooling system, the heat pump provides both functions in one compact, affordable system.

Heat Pump Sizing & Efficiency

Once you understand how heat pumps work, it’s easy to see why they’re so much more energy efficient than many other commercial heating and cooling systems. Heat pumps come in a variety of sizes and with varying efficiency ratings, so you want to make sure you evaluate the specifications of all of the systems you’re pricing before you make your selection.

You should also make sure that the heat pump unit you choose is the right size for your property. Even if you choose the most energy efficient model on the market, you won’t get optimal results if the unit us not the right size for your building. Paying more for a larger unit than you need is certainly a waste of money, as you won’t be taking advantage of the extra capacity you’re paying for.

If you purchase a unit that’s too small for your facility, you’ll never really attain that level of indoor comfort you’re looking for. You’ll also be negating whatever energy efficiency that smaller unit had because it will have to be constantly running to try and get the temperature to where you want it. Taking on this excess workload means that your heat pump will use more energy than necessary to heat and cool your building and it will likely wear out and need repairs or replacement more quickly.
